Discovered in 1991 along the sheer, vertical gypsum and limestone cliffs in a very area in Galeana of Nuevo León, Mexico, this hyper-endemic species looks less like a plant and more like a piece of ancient, living geometric architecture. It features a starkly ribbed, star-shaped profile accented by a fine, woolly crown that produces delicate pink-to-magenta blooms when mature.

It is one of the most threatened species of cacti.
