Trichocereus Pachanoi Seedlings | San Pedro Cactus  Seedling

The San Pedro cactus, botanically known as Echinopsis pachanoi (syn. Trichocereus pachanoi), is native to the Andean regions of Peru, Bolivia, and Ecuador, where it has long been an important cultural and botanical plant. Today, it is widely grown as an ornamental and landscaping cactus due to its adaptability and vigorous growth.

San Pedro is more tolerant of regular watering and fertilization than most cactus species, making it an excellent choice for beginner growers. Its short, fine spines make it easier and safer to handle compared to heavily spined cacti, an advantage for households with children or pets.

This species is known for its rapid growth, often reaching up to 18 inches per year under ideal conditions, and readily producing offsets (pups). Because of its speed and vigor, Trichocereus pachanoi is commonly used as grafting stock for slower-growing genera such as Astrophytum and Ariocarpus.

San Pedro cactus is frost tolerant down to approximately 26°F (-3°C). In colder climates, it is best grown in medium to large containers that can be moved indoors during winter. During the growing season, it can be watered frequently—sometimes every two days—provided the top layer of soil has dried. Winter care should involve gradual acclimation to cool, dry, and low-light conditions to prevent etiolation. Growth should be reintroduced slowly in spring for best form and structure.

For optimal color and health, San Pedro prefers bright, indirect light or partial sun and a well-draining soil mix rich in organic matter and minerals. Mature plants produce large, white, night-blooming flowers with a strong, pleasant fragrance.

Seedlings are grown from seed and may show natural variation in form and spine expression. Each plant is carefully selected and shipped with protection to ensure safe arrival.

Seedlings are hardened off and can be grown as adult cacti under regular conditions.
