Lophophora Williamsii Var. Caespitosa Cactus

Lophophora Williamsii Var. Caespitosa comes from the region of La Perdida, Mexico. “Caespitosa” means “densely-clumped”, it refers to the dense tufts of stems. It is a variety of Lophophora that grows in a cluster with multiple heads. L. caespitosa is a button-like, spineless cactus. that has a dark green or light green colour. It grows in an area that stretches from from the Chihuahuan Desert to the South Texas Plains, on either side of the middle and lower Rio Grande River, Southward.

In the habitat, solitary and clumping plants are both present and it is not a rare event to find a caespitose seedling in the seedling tray among the more common single headed plants. Some L. caespitosa plants produce dozens of very small shoots each of them never reaching the dimension of a flowering plant. Others have bigger heads and can produce flowers and seeds.
