It is native to North America, where it is widespread in Western Canada, the Great Plains, and the central and Western United States. It also goes by the names plains pricklypear, starvation pricklypear, hairspine cactus and panhandle pricklypear
Will survive outdoors year-round throughout much of Canada. Cold Hardy to zone 4.
Produces juicy and edible red or purple fruits. with striking yellow flowers.
The prickly pear is one of the only two native cactus species in Canada and is considered endangered, with only two small populations known to be persisting today.
